Though originally organised to raise money for The Shandon Clock this Concert is to raise money for local voluntary organisations based in the Shandon. The Concert is being hosted by The Maldron Hotel on John Redmonds Street who have been instrumental in organising this event.

A feast of music everyone can enjoy. Tickets are available for The Maldron Hotel and James Nolan Butchers, Shandon Street for €5. You won't find better value than that!

Shandon Street Festival
An annual street festival that takes place that is scheduled for the 21st June 2014. The festival includes face painters, puppet shows, magic shows, stilt walkers, clowns, balloon modellers, food fair, Ceile and other live music throughout the day. 1pm – 6pm. This is a completely free event and is a great family day out that has grown in size over the last number of years. The event is organised locally by local volunteers particularly Linda O’Halloran from Cathedral Credit Union and James Nolan from Nolan Butchers on Shandon Street.

The Spirit of Mother Jones Festival
A unique festival celebrating the Spirit of Mother Jones; one of Cork’s most famous daughters, who was also described as being the “most dangerous woman in America”.
Mary Harris known as Mother Jones, was baptised in Cork 177 years ago in the North Cathedral, Shandon. After surviving the Famine in Cork she emigrated to Canada in the early 1850s, she became a teacher. She married in Memphis but lost her husband and their four children from yellow fever in 1867.
From the 1890s until her death in 1930, she became one of the most famous and feared trade union leaders in America. Fifty thousand people attended her burial. A new museum has just been announced for Mount Olive, her last resting place.
The festival celebrates her wonderful spirit and the spirit of others like her in their tireless fight against injustice. It includes public lectures, workshops, concerts, an award and an exhibition on her life and times. The festival runs from Tuesday 29th July – Friday 1st August 2014.

Coffa House
Established in 1976, it was the first social centre for the elderly in the city. Located at 21 Church Street and run on a voluntary basis. They have bingo on Monday Nights and have a pampering day on Tuesdays providing dinners to their visitors. Once a month they have a film night as well as a social night. They also have Christmas parties, Summer Parties, do mystery tours, and also have Gala concerts throughout the year. It is a great meeting point and social venue for the people of Shandon. They also open up on the day of the Shandon Street Festival and provide free refreshments to all attending.
The Cork Butter Exchange Brass & Reed Band, "Da Buttera"
While the Band is currently located at 48 Dominick Street, the Bands original home is on John Redmond. The Band was forced to leave it's original Band Hall back in the 90s as the building was listed as condemed. It is hoped that funds raised from this concert will help the redevelopment of the Shandon area and the restoration of the original Band Hall. This will provide the band with much needed rehearsal space and rooms to teaching music classes.

Tidy Towns
In 2013 SARA entered the tidy towns competition for the first time and scored very well. The judges were particularly impressed with all of the small laneways and streets and their names. Such a peaceful residential area within the heart of the city. Our 2014 tidy towns campaign is already well underway with regular voluntary clean-ups taking place and our plan is for more planting in the general area, painting, welcome signs and information when entering the Shandon area, maps of the local area explain the street names and their historic significance. Again this is completely voluntary and any money raised will be well spent on improving the area for all of its visitors and residents.
